Signing Starting Pitching Veterans to Long-term Deals

Dallas Keuchal, 31, hasn't signed with anyone yet.

Some ask why the Twins don't sign this former Cy Young winner to a long-term deal.

Terry Ryan is no longer the Twins GM. There's a reason for that.

He signed Ricky Nolasco (15-22 with a 5.44 ERA with the Twins), Phil Hughes (who collapsed after his first year), and Ervin Santana (who managed 1 1/2 pretty good seasons but who was also hurt or suspended for PED use for over half his contract) to long-term deals.

In fact, Hughes will still be paid $13 million this year by the Twins, our most expensive pitcher, AND he's not even on the roster any more.

Most GMs are getting smarter. Most veteran pitchers are not worth the money they seek.

Keuchal MAY be the exception if someone chooses to sign him, but the Twins aren't the only team with a history of throwing large amounts of money at mediocre pitchers.

Most have learned their lessons.

That's why Keuchal is still sitting at home.
