This one really bugs me. It always has. The Vikings have the ball third and goal from the 2 yard line. The defense is nailed for a penalty, too many men on the field. The penalty? The ball moves 1 yard closer to the end zone. Still third down. ANY other place on the field the ball would be moved 5 yards more down field and it would be a first down.
Now, of course the refs aren't going to give the team an automatic touchdown, but shouldn't it be FIRST down on the one yard line. You treat it AS IF you moved the ball 5 yards. Otherwise it's not really penalizing the defensive team.
They do it for pass interference and holding. They should do it for procedure calls, too.
