A temporary grounds crew put paint on the field incorrectly. At least that's the reason the NFL gave for canceling the first pre-season game of the season yesterday. I'm not sure we'll ever find out how such an embarrassing public relations disaster could occur for the NFL.
To be sure, fans won't really care. ESPN is kind of ticked that they didn't have a game to show, but no one who really likes watching football will miss this game from the schedule.
Unsafe field conditions matter. Again, that's the NFL's bottom line, and they are sticking with it.
