Vikes Asher Allen Retiring

He's only 24 but he's had a string of injuries and concussions. Though he didn't mention health issues as the reason he's quitting football, more players are showing concern about long-term, multiple concussion effects.

Watch for more top players to retire sooner rather than later. The game of football is changing.

Basketball

The Celtics are discovering the same thing that OKC is discovering, even at their best they might not be good enough.

Rondo had 44 points for Boston last nights, but the Celtics still lost in O.T. They are now in a 0-2 hole that's going to tough to dig out from.

The next two are at Boston, but sometimes home court doesn't mean much. This could be one of those times. Still rooting for Boston, but expecting the Heat to sweep.

Twins Sweep A's

Minnesota hasn't swept a series at home since last June.

Former A, Josh Willingham, had another tremendous blast yesterday, giving him his 10th HR of the season. He also had three of the four Twin RBI. I'm glad he's on OUR side now.

Burnett and Gray pitched three innings of scoreless relief.

The biggest deal? Liriano returned to the starting rotation and pitched 6 shutout innings, adding 9 K's to his resume in the process. Now Oakland isn't known to be a hitter's ball club, but it was still nice to see Liriano respond since he's got a starting role again. I'm not overly optimistic at this point.( He pitched a no-hitter last year and he really hasn't done much of anything since.) Yesterday was a first step.

We're all still waiting for consistency.

Even with all that being said, Tim Lincecum, the San Francisco Giant who is considered one of the absolute best pitchers in baseball, is having an awful season so far, too. Maybe it's just a matter of time before BOTH return to form. I'm including his stats for comparison.

San Antonio

It's hard not to root for the Spurs. OKC is a good team, but San Antonio has no real weaknesses. It's hard to beat a team this good that is consistently playing well at every facet of the game. That's 20 straight wins for a team that looks better than anybody I've ever seen.

They could be the best ever. Of course, they still have to finish this series and they have another series to play if they beat OKC. I'm not going to get too far ahead of myself just yet.

The Hammer Strikes

Two on, two out, bottom of the ninth. Twins down by two, Josh Wlllingham at the plate. One mighty blast later, the Twins have another dramatic ninth inning win 3-2.

This is getting kind of fun. New starter, Cole DeVries struggled with control early but still managed 5 shutout innings. The problem was the Twins offense. Until the end. Willingham has had some trouble at the plate lately, but he took care of that with one swing of the bat. That was his fifth career walk-off homerun.

I'm trying to take this season one game at a time. Last night was a good one.

Twins Win!

Top of the ninth. A's have the bases loaded and they are down by one with two outs. Capps strikes out the final batter.

Whew!

Much better. The Twins record is still just 16-32 on the season.

NBA

I tried watching some of last night's game, but it wasn't much of a contest. The Heat won easily.

DUI of the Day

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been arrested in Alabama on charges of driving under the influence and attempting to elude police, his second arrest in his home state in two months.

Fairly was also cited for reckless driving, no proof of insurance and open container. Fairley posted $1,750 bond and was released shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist says the team is aware of the reports and is gathering information.

Notes

P.J. Walters had another great start for the Twins yesterday. Matt Capps had a horrible finish.

I enjoyed the Thunder/Spurs game last night. Personally I think these two are the best teams in the NBA so this is really the finals. What the Heat and Celtics are going to do won't really matter. One of those teams will simply lose in the actual finals.

The Spurs have now won 19 games in a row. They are going to be a tough team to beat.

Observations

The Twins losing again was not the worst Twins news I heard yesterday. Francisco Liriano has "earned" his spot back into the rotation after giving up 3 runs in just two innings of relief on Friday. This season just gets worse and worse. Liriano is scheduled to start Wednesday against Oakland.

Did I mention Pavano gave up 6 runs and 10 hits in a little over 4 innings yesterday?

The Celtics managed to pull out game seven at home last night against the Sixers. They head to Miami next. Rooting for Boston. Expecting the Heat to sweep.

Vikings

The Minneapolis City Council approved their part of the Vikings stadium bill on Friday in a close vote. That was the last potential hurdle. The Vikings should have a new stadium by 2016.

Notes

Anthony Swarzack looked bad last night in his starting role. Francisco Liriano looks bad in every pitching role.

The Twins have scored 14 runs in their last two games and have lost both. It's getting hard to watch again.

Notes

The Pacers were not up to the task last night as LeBron and D-Wade stole the show in Indiana. I was hoping for more of a fight from the Pacers, but the better team won. Still rooting for the Celtics in this conference, but not overly optimistic at this point.

Remember when Albert Pujols was considered the best hope of beating Barry Bonds all-time homerun record? He hit his 450th last night. He still needs over 300 to catch Barry. That's 30 a year for the next 10 seasons. I don't see it happening anymore. A-Rod still has the best chance but he still needs about 125. Not out of the question, but since he did steroids on purpose no one is rooting for him that hard anymore. For those wondering, Alex will turn 37 in late July.

Winning and Losing

Alexi Casilla is not a major league ballplayer. His error in the third inning last night gave the White Sox three unearned runs. It threw off the rhythm of our new starter and changed the rest of the game completely.

It looks like we got killed last night, but that grand slam would not have happened if  Alexi hadn't muffed an easy out in the third. Things like that matter. The difference between winning and losing a game are simple things. This was one of those things, and Alexi does them all the time.

As long as we have Alexi, we will not have a winning ball club. It doesn't matter how good your young pitchers are when you have idiots like Alexi playing behind him.

Gardy used to know things like this. He seems to have forgotten.

Nick Punto made ONE boneheaded play in his entire tenure for the Twins. Alexi makes two or three like that a week. Let's get rid of him and move forward. Or we won't be able to move forward.

Notes

Scott Diamond got his first loss last night, but it wasn't all his fault. The Twins were shutout for the eighth time this season last night and the Twins defense had three errors accounting for three unearned runs. Chicago has a good young starter as well in Chris Sale. He was REALLY good last night.

The Heat had two of their players suspended because of the rough play Monday night. That's a good first step by the league. The next game is in Indiana. They should now have a slight advantage in that game, now.

New Twin

Jason Marquis needed to be replaced. The Twins are bringing up former Golden Gopher, Cole DeVries to take his place. He's scheduled to start Thursday against the White Sox. Will lightening strike yet again?

I guess we'll all find out come Thursday.

Flagrant Fouls

The NBA has a serious problem on its hands. While the Heat and its fans are the celebrating a blowout victory over the Pacers last night, most of America was shocked by how absolutely brutal the fouls were.

This is not the rep the league needs right now. Fines and suspensions should be imminent.

At least I hope they are. Clubbing fouls ruled the game last night with no pretense of defense. That's as bush league as it gets. The Heat is one of the league's premium teams, the NBA cannot allow their showcase games to be played this way.

It was a huge turnoff and detracted from the Heat's huge romp.

Twins Win

The Minnesota offense, led by Morneau and Willingham, clubbed the White Sox into submission last night while P.J. Walters pitched a complete game gem.

I KNOW the Twins aren't going anywhere this year, but with the good pitching and hitting we've seen lately, it's possible that the Twins might still salvage a .500 season.

I'm actually looking forward to some of these games. I haven't said that for about a year now.

Go Twins!

Catching Up

It was fun reading about what I missed last night.

The Lakers seasoned ended as expected as OKC proved the better team in that series. I'm looking forward to seeing the red hot Spurs (interesting mind picture) battle Oklahoma.

It sure wasn't a surprise that the the Twins dumped Jason Marquis and that 8 plus ERA yesterday. Sunday's fiasco was just his latest horrible outing. I'm looking forward to anyone who replaces him. (Okay, anyone but Liriano and his 8 plus ERA.)

A Day Off

I didn't watch or read about sports last night.

It was a nice break. I watched the series finale of House and a couple new episodes of Pawn Stars.

I even skipped "fake sports"last night in the form of WWE RAW.

Life without sports? Interesting concept.

Drew Butera

Yes, the Twins got clobbered yesterday, but there was a fun bright spot, catcher Drew Butera pitched a very good inning of relief.

He hadn't pitched since high school but he did end up throwing a 94 mile an hour fastball, and averaged OVER 91 MPH for all of his fastballs. He walked a batter but he also struck out former Twin Carlos Gomez.

His ERA? 0.00

Maybe the Twins should use him more in this role. He seems better than a lot of our other prospects.

I'm serious.

I'll Have Another Wins Preakness

No horse since 1978 has won the Triple Crown. I'll Have Another won the Preakness yesterday giving it a chance to do so at the Belmont Stakes in just a few weeks.

Since 1978, over 40,000 horses have died on American race tracks. Usually it's a broken leg. For those of you wondering, that's 24 horses a week on the average. A recent American TV show was cancelled because a couple of horses died on the set. Even though no real evidence of neglect was demonstrated, the set and TV show was deemed potentially dangerous and the show was shut down. Horse racing has been proven extremely dangerous to the animals and yet it continues.

I know that horse racing is a gambling gold mine in the U.S. but I'm not really sure why it still escapes scrutiny. Of course I want I'll Have Another to win the Triple Crown, but at the same time I don't think these races should be taking place.

40,000 horses. And that's just in the U.S. There's a darker side to this sport of kings. I just like reminding people of that once in a while.

OKC Takes 3-1 Series Lead

I finally get to have a rant. I would have liked to actually watch last night's game. Why does the NBA make it so difficult for 3/4 of the country to do so?

There was only one other playoff game yesterday and it was done way earlier. Why does the NBA think that starting the game at 10:30 p.m. eastern time and 9:30 p.m. central time makes even a little sense? Don't they WANT as many viewers as possible. I know that on Saturday nights many go to bars, but there are a lot of potential viewers who still go to bed at a normal hour. Kids want to see these games, too!

NFL games start earlier, especially playoff games. MLB playoff games start earlier. WHY does the NBA do this? Even starting the game an hour earlier would give them so many more viewers. It's like they don't even consider anybody but the west coast. It doesn't make economic sense and it costs them fans.

Morons. Just another reason why so many consider the NBA a bush league.

On the lighter side? OKC won.

Four Straight

I have a confession to make. With two out in the top of the eleventh, I turned the game off to go do something else.

Yep. I missed the game winning home run and Matt Capps' ninth save.

That's okay, though. I got to see highlights and MOST of the game. I'm just happy that the pitching has been good enough to keep watching.

Lakers Win

The Lakers back home in LA played much better last night. And as good as they played (they made 41 of 42 free throws) they still just barely won the game 99-96.

I seriously doubt any team will ever be that good from the line again, so even though Kobe was great, especially down the stretch, it still looks like OKC will win the series.

But the Lakers are starting to fight back. Most would enjoy a 7 game series. I'd be okay with that.

Three Straight Wins

For the first time all season Minnesota got three straight wins.

With Scott Diamond taking the mound, I figured this would be a good chance to finally watch another Twins game.

I wasn't disappointed. Diamond was good. Span was great. And both Willingham and Mauer had lots of hits and RBI. Even Morneau had another 3 RBI.

I wish the Twins had some more good young starters available in the minors to call up because their two "new guys" have sure made a difference.

And their current lineup seems to remember how to hit. Especially with two outs and runners in scoring position. I told myself with a season this bad I was going to try my best to enjoy the good games. Last night was a great game and well worth watching.

Twins Notes

Chris Parmalee has been optioned to Rochester to make room for Morneau on the roster. Morneau's blast in his his first game back was a pleasure to behold. Here's hoping He keeps getting better from here on out.

The Twins have finally admitted that Carl Pavano's shoulder is starting to show wear from all the innings he's pitched for them the last few seasons. The MRI showed no real damage but the inflammation is causing him to change his pitching style and speed. The Twins are hoping that a little rest will help what's ailing him. Regular cortisone shots will be next if that doesn't work.

Stat of the Day: Joe Mauer went 0-5 yesterday as his batting average has now dropped to .265.

Heat Get Beat

I'm actually enjoying the NBA post season. The more times that teams like the Lakers and Heat get beat, the more my enjoyment level rises.

Last night, it wasn't even close. The Pacers at home drubbed the Heat to take a 2-1 series lead.

More please.

Twins Sweep The Tigers!

Not a whole lot has went the Twins way this season, but the good news is that Detroit is having a really bad season as well.

Case in point: The Twins beat them in a brief two game series. I have no hopes for this season, but it's great to see that the Twins may have two very good young pitchers in their rotation. It's also nice to see that when the Twins leave the confines of their cavernous home ballpark that they can actually hit the ball deep.

Perkins got out of early trouble in the eighth and Capps slammed the door.

In a season this bad, all of those things make you realize that baseball can still be fun once in a while.

Yesterday was a day that the Twins and their fans both needed.

Lakers Lose By TWO

A much closer game with very little scoring, it didn't really matter as the Lakers got beat by my new favorite NBA team, OKC, again and are now down in the series 2 games to none.

One of these days I'm going to find out Oklahoma's team name.

I just like saying OKC at this point.

Blackburn Stinks Up the Joint

Nick Blackburn gave up 6 runs in 2 innings last night. Luckily, Minnesota received 4 errors from Detroit in exchange. The Twins won the game 11-7.

Blackburn says his thigh is hurt. Doumit is on the DL with a strained calf.

Even the wins aren't as fun as they used to be.

At least it's a win and Jeff Gray looked good in relief.

Observations

The Twins got shutout again yesterday, but under my new rules on this site, I will not dwell on it.

The Heat got beat in Miami last night. That one made me smile. I don't expect the Pacers to win that series, but just knowing Miami still plays that bad in playoff ball gets me excited about NBA action.

Okay, I kid. Nothing can get me excited about NBA basketball. Oklahoma is my team to follow this year, so at least I have a rooting interest. I'd like to see Boston join them in the finals, but I think that team has gotten way too old to make it that far.

In my old sports blog I commented on Roger Clemens and his PED case. I think it's interesting that two jurors in two days have fallen asleep listening to the "evidence" presented. McNamee saved all his old injection needles to prove he wasn't the only one at fault in case charges were ever brought against him.

What would I take away from a guy like that? IF he thought that far ahead, I'd think he was more than capable of faking the same evidence. A syringe with steroids added to a syringe with Clemen's blood/DNA for other injections? Easy as pie for a paranoid obsessive.

Let this be a lesson for all you steroid abusers out there. Don't have anal retentive friends do the deed. And don't let Jose Conseco near you either.

Lakers Whipped

OKC was clearly the better team last night. It wasn't even close.

Most experts already thought Oklahoma was the favorite to win it all this year. Last night kind of confirmed that.

We'll see how the next game goes, though. That's why they play a SERIES of games instead of just one.

College basketball could learn from that.

Twins Drama

Willingham and Doumit tied the game in the eighth.

Capps lost it in the ninth.

arghhhhhh!

Diamond Shines in Twins Win

I actually took the time to watch most of yesterday's Twin's win.

I was rewarded for my effort. And I'm also glad I stopped watching it after 7 great innings by Scott Diamond. It was a beautiful day yesterday so I went for a walk just as Jared Burton came in. I missed his three runs and one out. My memories of the game will be much better as a result.

By actually watching so much of the game, I discovered something I didn't know just watching bits and pieces. The Twins, as bad as they are on offense, are extremely patient at the plate. I noticed they walked 8 times yesterday so I went back and checked the last few games. They walked 26 times in the four game series with the Blue Jays. I started checking other stats as well.  It looks like the Twins strike out less than just about anybody.

Both of those stats are major pluses and indicate just maybe they can get a few more wins this year. At the same time the Twins had 18 base runners yesterday and only scored 4 runs. They've left an awful lot of base runners on the last couple of games. How they don't score runs with those types of stats is totally beyond me.

One last plus? Capps is now seven for seven in save opportunities. He doesn't get the chance often, but when the opportunity comes up, he's been perfect so far. The Twins split a series. That in itself is a big step forward.

A.L. Central

It's hard to believe that there is only one team in our division playing above .500 ball and that the top three teams have a combined record that's barely .500.

How pathetic must the Twins be to be  9 games out in a division this bad?

It's interesting to note that the team that swept the Twins to start the season, Baltimore, is still leading their division and that Boston is mired in last place there. Who would have thunk it?

P.J. Walters

The Twins latest call up looked pretty good Saturday night. The problem? He still lost 2-1 as the Twins can't seem to consistently hit major league pitching.

The long, dreary season continues, but the two new starters at least look like they have some potential.

The Twins record for the season now stands at 9-24.

ouch

Twins Win!

I rarely get to use this headline so I'm going to enjoy it.

Capps is SIX for SIX in save opportunities. He got Bautista to pop out with the tying run on third. Nice.

Darin Mastroianni got his first hit for the Twins and drove in 3 runs.

The game started late so I missed most of this. They need a few wins in a row to get fans to care. Hopefully this is that first win to start the streak.

Hamilton

Josh Hamilton is having an amazing week. He hit two more homers last night. Look at these stats.

Harper

Bryce Harper, the teenage phenom playing for the Nationals, learned a tough lesson last night, when you go 0-5, don't lose your temper and accidently take it out on yourself.

Anger, a bat, a hard swing in the tunnel, and a rebound off the wall that hits you in your own face. These are the things that let let everyone know you lost your cool.

Especially when blood is trickling (flowing?) down your face.

Hopefully he learned that lesson. He's got a ton of potential.

Patience grasshopper.

Comparisons

For those of you wondering, Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer have combined for  6 home runs and 31 RBI between them thus far this season.

The Twins two "replacements" for these guys? Doumit and Willingam have 11 home runs and 35 RBI for the Twins.

Thoughts

Kobe Bryant wasn't feeling well going into game 6 last night at Denver. He felt even worse when it was over, as the Lakers got kicked. There will be a game 7 in LA and everyone is expecting the Lakers to bounce back after two straight losses. But rooting AGAINST the Lakers makes it easier for me to watch NBA basketball. Go Nuggets! (Sorry Myron.)

I have more faith in jurors after hearing the latest in the Amy Senser verdict. It seems the jurors wrote an additional note to the judge when they handed him their verdict. It said that they believed AMY did not not know she hit someone when she had the accident. They wanted the judge to read that statement along with the verdict.

Now I'm really confused. What were they instructed to vote on by the judge? IF they didn't find her negligent (and they didn't) AND they didn't think she even knew she hit someone (as the note said), isn't the that the very definition of accident?

In other words, the victim was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and he accidently got hit by her vehicle. Why was she found guilty of anything other than failing to admit she did it when she heard the news? Was their pressure to FIND her guilty just because of her celebrity status? This ruling was just wrong. AND the judge KNEW this before he read the verdict? A first year law student would know better...

Cris Carter has admitted that HE had bounties out on defensive players who threatened him. I mentioned in a previous post that bounties have been common (and ARE common) but that we'd only find out about it when players retired. It appears I was right again. Anybody else think that more of these types of stories will be coming out in the next few months?

Vikings Stadium

YES! YES! YES!

Twins

With pitcher Matt Maloney designated for assignment and Danny Valencia sent to the minors, you have to wonder if the Twins have enough players in their system to even field a major league ball club.

Chris Parmalee, at first base, has been as bad as Valencia has been at third. The problem is the Twins don't have anyone they can call up to play first to replace him. Morneau, the guy given a huge long-term deal to play that position for us, isn't exactly healthy. He may never be healthy.

The starters have all been worse than nearly anyone could have predicted or even imagined. For all we know,  Matt Capps may be the best closer in baseball right now. The problem is we never have a lead in late innings, so we may never know.

This was the season I saw developing mid-way through last season. I still turn on the TV and see how the Twins are doing every night. I just don't leave it on very long. Even that's becoming a chore.

Buckle up gang. It's going to be a very long and bumpy ride.

Still Waiting

The re-worked stadium compromise bill passed the house early this morning. The senate needs to okay it yet. That's not supposed to be a problem, BUT at this point who knows? The Vikings don't like having to pay more money as part of their share, but they have made it clear that they are willing to do so.

We're also still waiting for Francisco Liriano to become a good pitcher. The Twins have decided his next stop should be the bullpen. IF he performs poorly there, the Twins will have to consider more drastic options and I don't think there are many Twins fans left that will argue that Liriano is too good to release or trade. He's had his chance. He's had several chances. He's just not very good.

$400 Million

THIS is why teams shouldn't give massive long-term deals to perceived superstars. Even if they've had some really good years, that's no real guarantee that they will continue to perform at elite levels for another decade.

NO two players are worth the $400 million these two will make by the end of their current contract deals.

There's something else these two players have in common. Their teams are in last place in their respective divisions.

Baseball Cards

Collecting baseball cards has fallen out of the mainstream over the last decade or so. So many companies, so many different sets and so many different quality levels produced a glut that brought about indifference to the hobby.

That and the dark cloud of steroid use. Who cares if they guy hit 600 homeruns and is on a limited edition platinum card? He may have tarnished the game. Oh, and there's also his limited edition gold card and the one that has a piece of his jersey imbedded in it. And part of his bat...

Did I mention that kids also find other types of cards like Yugio and Pokeman way cooler nowadays?

But there's one thing that can't take away from people who have huge collections of old baseball cards that are pretty much useless. That would be the Baseball Card Game.

As far as I know, my twin brother and I invented this when we were 10 years old and it's so simple and fun to play that anybody can do it who has piles of old baseball cards.

And it gives new life to those old cards.

Randomly shuffle piles of old cards and have each player take 20 of them. The more cards you have, the more fun the game.

Each player deliberately selects a card (based on it's number) from the one that he's been dealt and they lay them down at the same time. They turn them over and the player with the highest number keeps both cards and those captured cards are put in a pile away form the cards they are still playing with.

You do that until all 20 of your cards are used up. The player with the biggest pile of captured cards wins.

Since you may be playing with dozens of years worth of old cards the odds of winning can't be calculated. One person may have several 800 number cards. Another may have a pile with no cards higher than the number 300.

The best part? There actually is a strategy to this game. Some will use all their smaller number cards first letting the other guy use his higher number cards to win early. Others may choose to use their higher number cards randomly hoping that's the other person's strategy.

The more you play, the more you'll see the potential strategies. And since this isn't like real cards you have no idea what numbers may come up when the other player shows his cards. Your guessing that your 650 card will trump his and then his 804 comes up and beats you. Again, the older card sets had numbers that high. If you have some of those, it's even more fun.

It's fun and my twin and I wasted hundreds of hours of our childhood playing this. We didn't need fantasy baseball. We had The Baseball Card Game.

The funny part? We played it  with ALL our cards. That included THREE Nolan Ryan rookie cards. We had no idea of their potential value. But we knew the value of the game.

To quote a TV commercial. Priceless.

One more thing. You can have as many players as you like, though strategy probably goes out the window with 8 players.

Observations

It was a great day to be a Minnesota sports fan yesterday.

The Vikings got their new stadium (barring weirdness in the two branches final compromise bill.)

The Twins called up Scott Diamond and he shutout the Angels 5-0.  Hope for the future arrived yesterday and he may be more than just a "diamond in the rough." Oh, and Doumit hit ANOTHER homerun.

Finally, the kid in me re-emerged yesterday when I watched replays of Josh Hamilton's FOUR homeruns yesterday. Baseball can still be very cool if you let it. Knowing each was a 2-run homer satisfied the symmetry in me as well.

I might even post a little bit more later today.

We're Not a Red State or a Blue State

WE'RE A PURPLE STATE!

Democrats and Republicans came together in the state senate yesterday. And when red and blue mix together you get really pleasing color called Vikings Purple.

Nobody got exactly what they wanted, but unless the senate and house can't reach the usual compromises on each version of their respective passed bills, the Vikings WILL be in Minnesota for at least the next 30 years.

FINALLY!!

Observations

The Vikings Stadium Bill vote has been delayed until sometime today. That's not a good sign.

The Vikings have decided their place kicking draft pick is very good. In a surprise move, they sent Ryan Longwell on his way yesterday. Blair Walsh was handed the job outright after three days of showing off his skills at rookie camp this past weekend.

I will at least mention that the Twins lost to Weaver and the Angels again last night. The bright spot? They actually got 6 hits in this game.

Monday, May 7, 2012

Historically Bad

When the Twins season started I gave people a multiple choice quiz about how bad they would be this year.

One of the choices was historically bad. The Twins took a step toward that this last week. Over a 4 game period the Twins only managed a total of 9 hits. That's the least amount of hits by any team over any 4 game span since 1900.

Yesterday the Twins lost again. The highlight? Ryan Doumit hit two solo homeruns.

V Day

This coming Monday the legislators of Minnesota have promised to vote on the original stadium bill that was introduced before the Republicans new plan (which has since been dropped.)

It includes (as far as I can tell but I'm getting sick of trying to read and follow all of this) renovation funding for the decrepit capital building (repairs that could cost upwards of a QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS. I talked about this in a different post but it seems inane to me that the legislators are voting THEMSELVES a remodeled office space that only they will really benefit from while ignoring that millions of Minnesotans will enjoy the Vikings for the next several decades for a little over 50% more than they are spending on themselves. The Vikings Stadium will at least PAY for itself. We all know that won't happen with the government. It's a sink hole and a money pit that just keeps getting larger every year.

Anyway, that makes Monday V day. Vote day, or Vikings Day, your choice. It actually could determine a lot in what happens next for our at one-time loved Vikings. V Day will go down in history either way. I'm hoping the V stands for victory, but I'm not dumb enough to hold my breath.

Twins Notes

The Twins have been all levels of inept this week. Until they got three runs late last night, they hadn't scored since Monday!.

There was a time when they had 47 consecutive at bats this week without even a hit!

But they did win last night and that brings their season record to 7-18. That's a red hot 28% winning percentage. At this pace the Twins could win upwards of 45 games this year.

Observations

Mariano Rivera may be done. The best closer of all-time tore his ACL last night in warm-ups. At 42 years of age, he needs some time for surgery, recovery and rehab. He'll be 43 before all of that happens. There just aren't a lot of guys still playing at that age. It looks like he went out with a whimper instead of a bang.

Too bad the Twins aren't in contention this year. We'd FINALLY have a chance at beating the Yankees in post-season.

The Senser Verdict

Joe Senser was a great Viking for many years. It's his wife that's been making the news lately, though.

I've only followed her trial for the last few days in the news but was absolutely stunned by the jury's verdict.

There basically were three outcomes that could be decided.

1. She was negligent (impaired or not paying attention) and that negligence resulted in someone's death. AND she was aware that she hit someone and failed to report it.

2. She had an accident because someone was not visible and she hit him with her car as a result. AND she was aware she hit someone and failed to report it.

3. She had an accident because someone was in a dark area. She hit that person and didn't even know it because it happened in an area with lots of construction cones and things to hit. Later she found out what she had hit someone and failed to report it quickly enough.

The prosecution never proved she was negligent. The jury found her not guilty of that.

But the jury found her guilty of criminal vehicular homicide, which basically is the the second option above.

The problem? The prosecution never proved she KNEW she hit anybody. Even in their closing arguments they said she was "probably" impaired, and that she "probably" erased text messages to her family that dealt with her accident to protect herself.

"Probably?" What kind of evidence uses the word "probably?"

The saddest part about all of this is that the jury has to be reasonably convinced that she KNEW she hit somebody for there to be a real conviction. Despite all the testimony from all of the prosecutions witnesses there really was no evidence that Amy Senser was covering up anything.

I figure I must have missed something until KARE 11 news last night interviewed a jury member just hours after the verdict. When asked if he thought Amy Senser KNEW she hit someone with her car, he stated quite pointedly, "I couldn't tell you."

THE JURY HAD TO BE CONVINCED SHE KNEW to bring back a guilty verdict. In other words they convicted her without believing she actually knew she hit someone. It was the most critical piece of the entire trial and they skipped right over it.

I hope I never go to trial for anything. People have lost their ability to think or reason and they just want their opinion to be heard. It doesn't matter that their opinion has nothing to do with presented fact.

If I were Amy's lawyers I'd get a copy of that interview last night and show it to the judge. That's enough for a mistrial.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

Observations

Junior Seau must have not had many friends. Everyone I saw interviewed said they were completely surprised by what happened yesterday. Friends would have seen warning signs. People with no friends are often miserable. I guess we saw the result of that early yesterday morning.

The Saints have lost the services of their best defensive player for a year. Their bounty program has hurt the Green Bay Packers as well as a former Saint is now on their roster. I'm still thinking that what the Saints did is more common throughout the league. I'm also thinking that other players on other teams are keeping their mouths shut about it until they retire.

Twins

If anyone decided to watch the whole game last night you saw a NO HITTER!

I went to bed. It's just not as cool when it's your team that is no-hit.

Is that a word?

Liriano

His ERA went down last night. He "only" gave up 4 runs in a little over 5 innings. He's now below 10.0.

Other good news? The game was only 2 hours and 10 minutes! Everybody could get to bed early last night since their pitcher retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced.

New Vikings Stadium Proposal

Just when everyone else was ready to vote for the old one. Just when everyone else was ready to go home for the season.

Best Quote About NFL Draft

"Assigning grades the day after the NFL draft is kind of like stopping the Masters after the first hole and slipping the green jacket onto someone you think might win the tournament 71 holes later. No one knows how anything associated with the 2012 NFL draft will turn out. Just like no one knew instantly in 2005 that taking Troy Williamson and Erasmus James ahead of Aaron Rodgers would be two bad ideas that would haunt the Vikings into the 2020s."

Mark Craig wrote that one for the Star Tribune.

Observations

Do you  remember when Torii Hunter hitting a homerun and driving in three runs was a good thing?

Since he started playing for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and The Greater L.A. Area most of the time I don't even know what he's doing any more. Last night I noticed. And the Twins three run rally wasn't enough.

I miss Torii. I miss that entire Twins era.

Punching Glass

The New York Knicks are already down two games to none to the Miami Heat in their NBA playoff series having been killed in their first game and beaten soundly in the second.

What does their best player do to show frustration after the loss? He punched the glass casing that holds a fire extinguisher. Amare Stoudemire will now most certainly miss the next game due to deep lacerations in the palm of his shooting hand and in all likelihood is done for the season.

For all you kids who haven't grown up to be hot heads let this be a reminder to you, don't punch glass.

And for all of you who haven't heard the other stories of frustration over the years, don't punch metal lockers either.

Actually, the lesson to learn hear is don't punch things or people. Period.

Ask Delmon Young. He'll tell you.
