Ian Desmond, one time All-Star shortstop for the Washington Nationals, turned down a contract extension offer of $107 million for 7 seasons before the 2014 season. He thought he could do better in free agency if he waited...
He had a horrible year in 2014, but the Nationals still offered him a 2-year, $16 million extension deal. He turned them down once more.
Last year was even worse. Washington released him.
He signed a one year deal with the Texas Rangers this offseason for $8 million.
By my math, he basically cost himself $100 million by waiting. The only way he could possibly make up for that is by having one of the best seasons by a shortstop ever and then hoping for another great offer after this season.
No one sees that happening.
$100 million. Gone.
Some folks are just greedy.
