More Upsets

I normally like upsets in sports, but in college basketball if you have a 2nd ranked team like Michigan State getting beat in their first game, it shows one of two things: 1) ALL the teams are so similar that ranking them becomes a fool's errand, or 2) lesser teams should not even have the opportunity to beat teams that were dominant all season. Being lucky once may make some fans happy, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

If an off day can cost a top team a spot in the finals, it lessens the overall game. If you play enough games, you're bound to lose a few, and some of those losses will happen against poorer teams.

With all the upsets yesterday, though, I think the real reason so many upsets occurred is because all the teams are simply too close in ability and performance. My 256 team tournament idea from yesterday is starting to make even more sense. Much like soccer, NCAA basketball has deteriorated into every team being pretty good sometimes.

The great random 256 team tournament of ping pong ball selections should be just around the corner.

And a 512 team tournament can't be that far behind.

In the meantime, go Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders!
