Gopher Basketball

I noticed a few media sources in the Twin Cities are raving about the Gopher's win against Ohio State a couple nights ago. Though the Buckeyes may CURRENTLY be ranked number 11 (or nine, according to which poll you follow) in the country, they won't be when the next rankings come out. They've lost 3 straight in the last week or so.

The Gophers have a better Big Ten record than the Buckeyes. Ohio State is not that good.

The Gophers appear to be one of the better teams in the Big Ten this year, but having rankings this early in college basketball means next to nothing. I've said it before, they shouldn't even START ranking the teams until the end of January, once they've all had more conference play.

When all you have to be is one of the top 65 teams to MAKE the tournament at the end of the year, having a ranking at this point means absolutely nothing.

Imagine how much more excitement there would be if the FIRST rankings would be released in two weeks. Commentators could be speculating about a top 10 right now and fans would be wondering IF their team is good enough to be there. Kind of like an early March Madness.

College basketball kills so much of the fun. Everybody could have a top 10 pick until the real rankings come out. And ESPN and FOXsports commentators would be fighting it out for bragging rights to the best rankings. It would seem like a big deal.

Right now? Ohio State is "number 11" officially. What a joke.
