Utah Ref Dies

About a week ago, a Utah soccer ref was punched in the face/side of the head by a 17 year-old player in a recreational soccer league game for giving the player a yellow card. The ref was taken to a hospital, later slipped into a coma, and has now died.

The ref was writing down his notes from the game when the player blind-sided him with the killing punch. The player, who was much larger than the ref, had been arguing with him over the call just before the attack.

The yellow card is ONLY given as a warning.  Only after two yellow cards and THEN a red card is a player ejected. It would best be compared to a player picking up his third foul in a basketball game. In other words, the offense wasn't that big of a deal.

The worst part? The ref has been attacked several times before. Angry soccer players are considered "part of the game" by those who watch and play it.

Sometimes I hate sports. I really do.
