Ponder

What if?

What if Frazier is a real good judge of talent? What if he does see how awful his other quarterback options are by seeing the bad footwork of Webb in practice every single day. What if Ponder is our only real choice because our other choices are just plain worse?

What if we give coach Frazier the benefit of a doubt?

Okay, let's play that game.

So why is Frazier doing what he's doing.?

MAYBE he's hoping like every other Vikings fan that next year he WILL have a better quarterback option. Maybe he's supporting Ponder at all costs because he knows that it is the ONLY way to keep Ponder somewhat competent until the season ends and he has no other real option but to play the poorly performing Ponder. Maybe deep down inside he's just like us. He wants a better QB but quite frankly there really is no one available to us right now that can do better.

He's keeping Webb on the bench as his ONLY insurance in case Ponder gets hurt. It's not the choice he wants, but that too is his only option. He's merely playing the odds. Maybe he'd like to do more with Webb as well, but for the time being Webb will not be a receiver or running back because he can't afford to lose his second best option to injury.

WHAT IF Frazier is hoping that he has a chance at another potential great QB pick next season? In all honesty I can't name ONE good QB who is available for the Vikes RIGHT NOW.

We aren't the only team looking for a good quarterback. As bad as Ponder is, how would you like to be the Arizona Cardinals right now? They have lost NINE straight after starting the season 4-0. Their combined QB rating for those 9 losses is less than 30, and they are trying out LOTS of potential QBs that nobody else wants.

Frazier isn't stupid. (Again let's give him the benefit of a doubt.) He sees what's happening in Arizona and the last thing he wants to do is play QB roulette knowing that Arizona is already trying out all possible available QBs and they aren't having any kind of success at all. They are miserable in Arizona. We are actually having a great season by comparison.

Maybe Frazier thinks his best chance is to keep doing what he's doing. Expect extraordinary play from a few individuals each week KNOWING he really does have some great players and by being their number one cheerleader, he might get some kind of playoff birth by limiting what Ponder is allowed to do.

He's hanging on, just like the rest of us, waiting for this nightmare of a season to end so that he can get someone better at QB next season.

But he's also a realist. And maybe we have to be that way, too. Will a much better QB be available for the Vikings next year? Sadly, maybe not. If nothing else, maybe we will find a better backup, and at that point maybe we can start depending on Joe Webb having extraordinary performances since he will no longer be saddled as backup QB. Just getting him in the game reguarly would give me some hope. Instead of Harvin and Peterson carrying the team, we will have Harvin and Peterson and a properly used Webb carrying the team.

There are a lot of teams worse than the Vikings in the NFL. All want QB help. We just have to get in line and wait our turn. And hope Frazier IS the mastermind I'm portraying here.
