Remember when the Twins traded Denard Span a few years back? They got 6 foot 9 inch Alex Meyer in exchange for him because they wanted a "power starter."
Well Meyer, now 25, is off to the worst start of his career at Triple A. His ERA is over 7 and he's averaging 5.5 walks per nine innings. The Twins have demoted him to the bullpen there. They haven't given up on him as a pitcher, just as a starter. They're hoping he can concentrate on just a couple of pitches and just rely on his speed. His career as a starter appears to be over, but maybe he'll make an impressive closer some day.
Perkins got great when he became a two-pitch (fastball, slider) pitcher. They're hoping Meyer will become that as well.
