Amnesty Designation

The vocabulary of sports business is getting harder and harder to follow. I saw a new term yesterday and it was used in an article about the T-Wolves who are trying to land Portland free agent Nicolas Batum.

"The Timberwolves used their AMNESTY DESIGNATION to waive center Darko Milicic on Thursday..."

Later the article said Milicic "will go through a MODIFIED AMNESTY PROCESS..."

In effect it means that any team who wants to pick up some of Milicic's remaining salary (that's not guaranteed) may procure his services for this upcoming season. If no one wants to pay him that extra cash, Milicic will become an unrestricted free agent.

I think.
